Its Time to Change Our Approach to Employee Wellbeing

It’s Time to Change Our Approach to Employee Wellbeing ‘Time to change’. You may recognize this phrase as the headline of Mind’s ambitious  campaign  to change the stigma around mental health. In line with this great work, we believe it’s also important we look at how to change the way employee mental health is handled in the workplace. According to Mercer’s 2019 report on mental health at work, two in five employees have experienced poor mental health due to work-related issues or stated work as a contributing factor.   Most employers would agree they have a responsibility to take care of their staff; not only to keep workers healthy but also because it helps productivity. By law, employers are required to provide the information, instruction, training, and supervision necessary to ensure the health and safety of their employees at work. Unfortunately, acknowledging this responsibility doesn’t always allow companies to enact change in practice. The truth is, mental health is complex and hard to measure. Every person responds differently to different interventions and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. According to figures from the  Global Wellness Institute (GWI), the “wellness economy” was valued at over $4 trillion in 2018. Contributing to this massive figure is that companies are investing significantly in workplace wellbeing, offering yoga classes, fresh fruit and smoking cessation courses, there may be confusion at their disappointing effect on absence rates or wellbeing. Traditionally, employers use surveys and indexes to measure changes in wellbeing, but as we see mental health issues at work rising, it’s clear that a new approach is needed.   It’s really hard to know what employees need, and which interventions work. The exciting thing is that we already have the tools at our fingertips. One of these tools is artificial intelligence (AI). There’s no doubt that AI has changed our daily routines: protecting our phones with face ID, providing instant access to safe and secure  taxi rides  or finding alternative  car routes  based on real-time traffic data. These applications have affected millions of people worldwide. It’s time to bring this approach to the workplace to make a real impact on mental health.   We’ve developed our product (BioBase) to offer comprehensive data insights about employee wellbeing, giving HR departments aggregated information about physiological and psychological wellbeing. Employers can use anonymized data to find out what their workers need to be healthy, happy, and productive.   Employees are  given a wearable device linked to an application on their phone. The device gathers data about how the body is functioning (sleep, activity and heart rate) and couples this with self-reported psychological information about mood and cognitive function. Then, it correlates how the body is doing with how the mind perceives stress. Having access to this new information will enable employers to deploy programs that are targeted and personalized for their workforce. As an example, if general physical activity levels have dropped, HR leaders could put in place an intervention encouraging physical activity at work; running a fitness class or implementing walking meetings. Moreover, notable increases in a poor mood and its physiological correlates (poor sleep, poor recovery from stress) could inspire early-intervention counseling services that are preventative as opposed to merely reactive. The combination of biometric and psychometric insights allow companies to create programs directly related to the problems of their workers,   and to monitor their effects in real-time.   Our product BioBase is specifically designed to tackle workplace wellbeing and empower everyone to take control of their mental health. Implementing new and improved tools in the workplace will help push wellbeing up the corporate agenda, transform people’s working lives and improve mental health across the globe. About the author: Dr. David Plans is Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder at BioBeats, responsible for developing the company vision and business strategy. David founded BioBeats in 2014 as an app that created music from a person’s own heartbeat in order to create a form of biofeedback that could engage the user and use cardiovascular data to understand stress. After developing the product and offering further, David and his Co-Founders focused the company on supporting the wellbeing of people both in and out of work and building resilience to stress.

Brexit Good or Bad News for UK Recruiters

Brexit Good or Bad News for UK Recruiters So we have voted to leave Europe. We have new leadership in place already and are about to start serious negotiations with the EU before we enact Article 50. Recruitment Managers are monitoring proceedings closely to work out their strategy moving forward. The temporary market across many recruitment sectors is booming. In fact, some sectors are seeing record numbers of enquiries post-Brexit, as some businesses dont want to commit to hiring permanent staff in these uncertain times. Meanwhile, the permanent recruitment market has been affected depending on sector. The effects range from no change to redundancies being made. Im hearing some  recruitment businesses specialising in the real estate sector have let consultants go,  as well as some within financial services. The secretarial market has seen less new requirements from small to medium sized businesses, but no change amongst the blue chips and larger financial institutions. Rhetoric from organisations of all sizes is very much lets wait and see. What next? Scenario 1 The UK and EU come to a loose agreement in principle about what the UK/EU relationship looks like post enactment of Article 50. Decisiveness, speed and communication of these preliminary discussions are three vital components in ensuring that any lack of confidence amongst UK businesses does not become the prelude to panic stations and likely recession. On the assumption that these discussions are held quickly and there is real progress on the Free Trade versus Free Movement of People discussion, and it is seen that the UK Government and key players within the EU are confident of a satisfactory outcome, then there will be renewed confidence amongst UK businesses. Particularly in the financial services sector and the recruitment companies that recruit into it. This could  lead to increased permanent requirements across the board. Scenario 2 There is no real progress between UK and EU pre enactment of Article 50. A lack of clarity and concern continue  surrounding what a post-Brexit landscape looks  like will lead to a reduction (or further reduction) of permanent hiring across the board. Businesses will likely continue to replace a high percentage of leavers but the creation of new jobs will take a hit. At the same time, businesses that are not already doing so, will look at whether they need to move some of their UK-based personnel abroad should there be a concern about the state of future free trade agreements and movement of talent within the EU. Scenario 3 Pre-enactment of Article 50 discussions are positive. Article 50 is enacted and the UK and Europe work closely to ensure there is a seamless transition with regards to Free Trade and Free Movement of People. This is the best outcome and in this case, I would expect the UK recruitment industry to bounce back to 2015 levels of recruitment across permanent and temporary markets. Scenario 4 Pre-enactment of Article 50 discussions are negative. Article 50 is enacted but discussions versus Free Trade and Free Movement of People are destructive. Following on from Scenario 2, businesses will start to follow through with plans to move personnel that need access to Europe into Europe. It is difficult to put a figure on the level of relocation but there will be movement and this will further affect the recruitment industry, not just amongst those companies specialising in the financial services sector. Scenario 5 There is no free trade agreement with Europe post  Brexit.Businesses which  need access to Europe move some of their personnel from the UK, whilst a lower £ and possible attractive tax rates bring an increased amount of investment into the UK from other countries outside the EU. London is still seen as a financial centre whilst the rest of the UK benefits because a wider range of UK industry is being invested in. The recruitment market will benefit after a recession caused by an absence of Free Trade with Europe. Assuming that Article 50 is enacted at the end of 2016/start of 2017, I would expect the wider recruitment industry to see 2015 levels of growth in 2019/2020. Brexit has shown us all that you cannot predict the future with any level of certainty, but you can look at a range of outcomes that may happen as a result of it and plan accordingly. Personal Brands are Like a Sweet Onion - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Personal Brands are Like a Sweet Onion - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Have you ever heard the expression Culture is like an onion? Geert Hofstede, a social psychologist created this explanation of culture. In his view culture is  a system that can be peeled, layer by layer, in order to reveal the inner, true content. Imagine the whole onion as ‘culture’ and as you peel on, you see different levels which influence culture in any society.  At the core of the cultural onion are values those things that  people hold dear to them. Layers of a Personal Brand To me this is a great visual as well when we think about personal branding. The core of any personal brand are the values that define who we are, our authenticity. All strong brands whether they are products, places, or people are based in what is true, genuine and authentic to them.  This is ultimately what attracts us to a brand.  Hofstede said that the inner-layer of the cultural onion is invisible and manifested through three other layers symbols, icons and rituals or the things others can more easily see, hear, or feel. In personal branding we would call these visible layers your brand environment, or the visual vocabulary of your brand. This includes your appearance, your surroundings, your brand identity system (logo, colors, business card, tagline, etc.), and your network or the people you choice to surround yourself with. When Your Personal Brand Stinks! When the outer layers of your personal brand supports your core values, then you are delivering on your unique promise of value. Likewise, when you use words, symbols, or actions that are not authentic to who you are, then you are portraying a false image.  When a brand stops being authentic we feel that brand is not honoring its values and brand loyalty is lost. This is when your personal brand  will stink like a rotten onion. The recent crash and burn of the Lance Armstrong brand, reminds me of this. Perhaps the best comment I have read about Lance’s collapse is from Sarah Banet-Weiser in her article  Why Livestrong Will Die, “Armstrong’s betrayal was not just about an athlete’s bad choices;  it was a betrayal of authenticity, and authenticity is the cornerstone of any brand.” Betrayal is the optimum word here.  We feel betrayed when a brand abuses our trust. And like a stinky onion it makes us cry! 4 Tips to Have a Sweet Personal Brand Not all onions stink! If you want to make sure your personal brand is sweet and does not make others cry, then follow these 4 tips. They will ensure the outer layers of your personal brand support your inner authentic core. Get Feedback:  The  360 °Reach Personal Brand Assessment  enables you to gather data  that defines the core of your brand. The process begins with a self-assessment and is followed by requesting feedback from others so you can compare how you view yourself with how you are currently perceived. The results will enable you to identify areas that you want to accentuate and areas you want to diminish as you develop your brand. Focus on Strengths:  Capitalize on your strengths rather than improve your weaknesses. Save time by taking what your are strong at and make it superb instead of wasting time on your weaknesses. When you focus on your strengths, you demonstrate passion and drive. When you focus on your weaknesses, you show frustration and stagnation.  In addition to 360Reach, use  StrengthsFinder 2.0. This is a great tool as it identifies how you can move forward with what you are good at by finding ways to work around your weaknesses. Tell Your Story, not Someone Elses:  Michael Margolis, founder of  Get Storied, says,  â€œYour story is your brand. You have to get others to believe and identify with your story. When you can do that â€" the need to persuade, convince, or sell disappears.”  We all have a unique story to tell and our story is what makes us authentic. Of course others can relate to our story because it may be similar, but it is never exactly the same. Each story is unique. Be Real Online (and Offline):  In  an interview last year, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said  â€œThe social web can’t exist until you are your real self online.”  Just like in the real world, being yourself online takes courage. It takes the willingness to be transparent. Use social media to portray the real you. Avoid nicknames and avatars and use your real name and a professional head-shot. Share bite-sized chunks about yourself but not your life history. Don’t just brag and boast. Listen and engage others as well.
